Friday Night Lights: Small Town Football Games

Mount Vernon Football

With football season in full swing, it’s always nice to see the town rally together to cheer for the big game.

Small Town, Big Crowd

Go ahead… Let those 5A, big city folks brag all they want about their fancy stadium and big city talent. Comparatively, we may be small…but we are mighty. Around here, we never have to worry about the stands being barren, with hardly any fans to sing aloud with the school song. There’s always plenty of local fans to cheer the team on from beginning to end.

A Community of Supporters

With a small, close-knit town like Mount Vernon, you’re always surrounded by a community of proud supporters. Having several local families that have raised their families here for generations, they proudly stand behind our local athletes and support them week after week.

And chances are, many of them spent their high school days playing on the same field. So, they carry on the tradition–proudly wearing school colors and waving their flags and foam fingers as they cheer along.

Football Rivalries are Everything

The ever-famous rivalry games happen everywhere, but they’re just not the same as those around here. We’re surrounded by other small towns with that same passion and pride in their teams that it makes those big rivalry games even more exciting.

Around here, we like to think of it as a friendly competition. Because chances are, you know several of the players on the other team–they may even be close friends or family. Don’t be fooled, though, our rivalries are just as exciting as those in big cities. It’s all about bragging rights until next year’s big game.

So here’s to another great season of rooting for the home team, eating too much when tailgating and losing our voices from cheering too loud in the stands.
